The next painting is titled 'Bookshelves'. Since books were something of a rarity at that time, pictures of books stacked in shelves were hung in order to elegantly decorate rooms of the noble class.

Many objects were used as themes for folk paintings during the Joseon period, but the tiger was particularly beloved by painters. This is because people thought the tiger was a spiritual being that connects the world of humans with that of gods. I do not think any other ethnic groups have drawn such innocent looking tigers as have the people of Joseon.

인사동의 골목 곳곳에는 재미있는 곳들이 많은데, 그 가운데 전통 문화와는 별 관계 없지만 가볼 만한 곳을 소개한다면 우선 '나이프 박물관'을 들고 싶다. 이곳은 말 그대로 칼 박물관인데 칼만 5,000여점이 전시되어 있어, 이런 죵류로는 세계에서 가장 크다고 한다.

지금 우리가 인사동을 방문하면 어떤 가게들이 있을까? 이곳에는 현재 500개가 넘는 가게가 있는데 이 가운데 30%이상이 음식점이나 찾십이다. 거개가 한식과 전통 차를 파는 집인데, 아마도 전통 찻집이 이렇게 밀집되어 있는 곳은 서울에서, 아니 전국에서도 여기밖에 없을 것이다.
